What does it mean?
During the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, the Red Devils supporters' group led the crowd in the 'Dae~Han-Min-Guk (clap clap-clap clap-clap)' chant, which spread nationwide as the signature World Cup cheer. It was originally a variation of the Suwon Samsung Bluewings supporters' chant 'Su~won Samsung,' repurposed for the national team during the World Cup.
Where did it start?
The chant is believed to derive from the Suwon Samsung Bluewings supporters group Grand Blue's cheer, 'Su~won Samsung (clap-clap-clap-clap-clap).' Around 1997, football supporters from around the country came together to form the Red Devils and adapted the four-syllable chant to the national team as 'Dae~Han-Min-Guk.' During the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup it exploded in popularity as the symbolic chant of street cheering, becoming almost like a national greeting, and it was even included on a track from the official World Cup album. The chant's copyright was later disputed by the late musician Shin Hae-chul, sparking controversy.
How is it used?
Can be used as-is as a clap chant when cheering for the national team.
