What does it mean?
Developed by Japan's Konami, the rhythm arcade game Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) landed in Korean arcades around July 1999. Its novel gameplay -- stepping on floor arrows in time with the music -- caught on quickly enough to spawn online communities almost immediately after launch, and combined with a diet craze at the time to become a social phenomenon enjoyed by people of all ages. It became popular enough that terrestrial broadcasters aired DDR tournaments, but it lost ground within about three years to the competing domestic machine "Pump It Up" from Andamiro.
